We must come to see the fundamental presumption of egoity, the “illusion” of being a separate entity defensively walled off from the whole, is at the bottom of all other intellectual frameworks and programs of living.
We must allow ourselves — again and again — to be emotionally penetrated by the realization that these frameworks and programs are essentially protective ideologies. They are mere images or models of reality by which we keep ourselves in a state of apparent security and certainty in the face of a universe that is mysterious and threatening. They are manifestations of “false consciousness” that distort our overall relation to the total world process.
